When Maurice Bristol Kilmer founded the M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home in Argyle in 1927, wakes and funerals were still being held in the home. Since the funeral director’s place of business was not a gathering place for families, a store front location, often used to sell furniture and coffins, was also used as a place to prepare the deceased for the home viewing/funeral. In 1930, “Mo’s” store front location burned to the ground, rendering the business a total loss. Undaunted, he moved to what is now the present location at 123 Main Street in Argyle. To day the M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home is a fourth generation family firm and continues to thrive under “Mo’s” son, George Kilmer, his grandson, Todd Kilmer, his great-grandson Kyle Kilmer, as well as Funeral Directors, Claire Konopka, manager of the south Glens Falls location, Tim Murphy, Stephanie Gilman, Morgan Wicks and Katie Morehouse as well as secretary Jaci Newell, secretary/bookkeeper, Deanna Russell as well as numerous funeral support staff. In addition to the Argyle location, the Kilmers also have funeral homes at 82 Broadway in Fort Edward, which was opened in 1970, and the former Clark Funeral Home at 136 Main St. South Glens Falls, which was reopened and expanded as the Kilmer Funeral Home in 1992.
